Come participate in an ASL study!

We are currently recruiting deaf native American Sign Language signers to participate in an MEG experiment about word identification.

The experiment is a collaborative effort between researchers at the Department of Linguistics at Gallaudet University and the Department of Linguistics and the Cognitive Neuroscience of Language Lab at University of Maryland, College Park.

The task is very simple

All that you need to do for this experiment is watch videos of gestures and decide whether they are real signs in ASL or not.

All we do is record your brain activity

While you perform your task, we will be measuring the magnetic fields spontaneously generated by your brain. This technique is called Magnetoencephalography, and is a completely passive, non-invasive, and completely safe brain imaging technology.

Who can participate

You are an elligible participant if:

  • You learned and started using ASL consistently before age 8
  • You are right-handed1
  • You do not have any neurological or psychiatric conditions2
  • You do not have any metal on your body3
  • You can read perfectly without glasses, or
  • You have corrective contact lenses

Experiment Duration and Compensation

The experiment itself takes around 2 hours, and we offer $10.00/hour for your participation, including your travel time to the CNL Lab in College Park, Maryland.
