In this talk I will review a variety of roles of inhibitory interactions and mechanisms in the auditory cortex. Receptive field differences exist between excitatory and inhibitory neurons that influence their mutual interactions. Excitatory and inhibitory neurons have distinct spatial pattern in relation to cortical functional organization. The development and plasticity of cortical receptive fields is strongly influenced by inhibitory influences and modulations. Finally, acute or chronic manipulations of inhibitory networks can lead to a range of consequences for the function of auditory cortex.
