Silvina Montrul is Professor and Head of the Dept of Spanish and Portuguese at the U. of Illinois, where she also holds appointments in Linguistics and the Second Language Acquisition Program. She is the editor of the journal Second Language Research, and she is the founder and director of the University Language Academy for Children, a program that promotes Spanish-language education for non-native speakers and language maintenance for heritage speakers. In recent years her research has focused on a comparative study of heritage speakers of different languages. The most recent among her 13 books and edited volumes is a textbook, El bilingismo en el mundo hispanohablante (Wiley-Blackwell, 2012).
